Raised in California, I discovered myself in the mountains, lakes, deserts, and highways of the American West. I studied astrophysics and education theory, served at summer camps, wrote four books about alternative education, spoke for parents, and took teenagers on their first big international trips.
Now I’m back in the US after 2.5 years abroad (mostly in Europe, mostly dancing) to cycle across North America for 6+ months and reconnect with my favorite people and places.

CS is a really good filter for finding open-minded, optimistic, multicultural people. That's why I often use CS just to meet people in the cities where I'm traveling/living, rather than just hosting/surfing.
CS ≠ Tinder. Couchsurfing brings together friendly, like-minded people, so I’m not surprised when I sometimes meet couples who first connected here. But to be clear, it is not a dating app. I’ve hosted and stayed with men, women, couples, and non-binary/non-conforming couchsurfers. Everyone is welcome, and everyone should feel safe.

I did not stay with Blake in Chalten however, he did let me stash my gear with him, provided the best shower I’ve had in South America, and was very flexible with me coming and going to grab gear. Blake and I met in a bike shop in coyhaique 2 weeks prior and there he hosted me with some friends at a cabana the group had rented. He fed me a delicious dinner and we shared stories of our trip bike packing the carretera austral. He even gave me USD to exchange which was very helpful when I got to Argentina. It was a pleasure to stay with you Blake and I am very grateful our paths crossed on that day in coyhaique. Hope we meet again. Cheers!
Blake proposed to meet in Bariloche with friends for a beer. It was really nice to meet other travellers and very interesting because we pass though the same places but Blake and his friends were on bike ! Very interesting to listen. I contacted with him one day before arriving to El Chalten and he answer me quickly to say me "Yes you can leave everything you need at my home". Blake is a fantastic guy! Incredibly helpful and generous. I publicly shared my trip as I was desperately trying to find a place to just leave my big bag for a few days and Blake very promptly got in touch and offered his place up.
Only knowing him very briefly, his friend decided to join me on a hike and Blake was very forthcoming in lending a lot of his equipment and generally being very helpful.
Blake made my life and my trip a lot easier and I loved having someone around town to have a pizza with everytime I got back from my hikes! I could pick his brain about his alternative education path and we’d laugh about the funny/ strange things that happened in good old el chalten.

I had the pleasure to meet Blake during his days in El Chalten. He was very attentive to my arrival and tried to help in amy way he could. I was invited twice for dinner to his place and could store my bike and gear there while I went trekking. Blake is a very chilled being, he transmits a good vibe and has some very interesting projects going on. A traveller by heart, he has plenty of life experiencies to share and some postive, good hearted ideas and values. He invited me to a bouldering festival and introduced me to some of his local friends, with whom we shared a lovely time. Definetely can recommend meeting him if you have the opportunity.

I met Blake in Santiago de Compostela along with his bicycle adventure partner Jack. I invited them along to my friends house where we not only made and ate pizza, but also danced quite a bit and even did some acroyoga! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed having Blake in our place. Even after cycling 90km, he made an effort to have dinner with us and help us cooking. Blake is a great host, who met me with a delicious dinner, and we talked much about many topics. As he is American, you can also enjoy good american English pronunciation while talking :D I stayed at his apartment for 2 nights, so Blake showed me the town-centre, we had a cup of cortado in one of many nice cafés in Freiburg, and a traditional german dinner in a bar, adviced by a friend of him. That was cool! I'm sure I wouldn't find all these nice places on my own.
Blake has a very special career path, he also writes his own books, so I'm sure you'll have pleasure of talking to him. His apartment is also greatly located, 3 min from both the town-centre and hikes to the Black Forest.

I stayed 2 days at Blake’s home in Freiburg (lovely city by the way, a must-visit) and felt very welcome and well-received, also by his friendly flat mate. We shared dinners and conversations, and went on a hike through the beautiful Schwarzwald which is literally across the street (Blake is a very fit man, no matter how hardcore you think you are, he’ll outdo you by trail running the entire thing all over again the next day at 6am haha). I think Blake is an intelligent, balanced and confident person who knows what he wants from life and how to obtain it. I enjoyed listening to his insights and observations, and appreciated him dividing the hosting time in shared experiences and some me-time (an art lost by many). Blake was my first couchsurfer in my new apartment in Krems and I couldn't have wished for a better first experience than this one. Blake is a super cool guy who has a lot to tell, and he is living quite a different life than most of us do, therefore I admire him. He stayed one night at my place as a stop on his bicycle trip from Vienna to Freiburg. We talked about a lot of stuff and had a drink together in a beer garden. If you get the chance to host or meet him go for it, you won't regret it.

Blake arrived by bicycle in Passau, we shared an old-town-walk - including a bavarian dinner - together and had very interesting talks and discussions all the time till late evening and during breakfast the next morning. I really enjoyed his thoughtfulness and respect concerning the subject and his interlocutor (that's me in this case! ;-)) , so that we even had a consensus full of sympathy about our dissents, a circumstance, which seems to get lost in many hindsights in present time. I was so happy to spend time with Blake! He is smart, easy to talk with, and having a conversation with him was both funny and eye-opening. Blake is an amazing guy and we had the best time ever in salt lake, from watching latest season of black mirror to cooking dinner among other things. He is super spontaneous, accommodating and also open to trying new things. He is a very eclectic person and can surprise you with how well he can mingle with people on various levels. Overall, I have found a new friend in him and would love to get to know more of him in the years to come. He is one of the must have couch surfers one should host and will recommend him for sure!
Blake contacted me when he was coming through Queenstown. Although we missed each other the first few times we were in the same town, we continued to stay in touch and eventually met up and practiced a bit of acroyoga together. So glad that we did! Blake was my first ever couchsurfer! He was super nice, and was in contact with me well in advance of when he arrived. He had everything outlined, was very polite, and was a joy to communicate with. During his stay he was just as lovely. He asked before he did anything, was a good conversationalist, understood I couldn't talk with him all night, was quite when I had to go to bed, and left my spare room cleaner than he found it. I would definitely host Blake again!

This was certainly one of the best couchsurfing experiences I've had. Not only did Blake open up his home to my friend and me, but he took us on our first overnight backpacking/camping trip! Wow, my friend and I were definitely spoiled by our short stay in South Lake Tahoe! Blake took me to the beach to play frisbee and swim, and cooked several delicious meals for us, all while preparing to go out of town!! I had friends staying in South Lake Tahoe for a couple of days and I needed a place to stay for one night. Blake offered his place for the one night. He met me and my friends for dinner at a restaurant he recommended. He was quite entertaining and informative as he told us about his business leading guided tours abroad for home schooled kids. How cool is that for finding a unique business niche. After that we went back to his place. He continued to impress me with his background. He lives in a small, well kept home. It was a very comfortable, one night stay. When I first requested a stay he wrote back saying he had requested to stay with me in Salt Lake some time ago but I couldn't accommodate him. Next time he travels my way I'll be sure to clear the decks for him for the pleasant time I had with him
Staying in Blakes tent was a blast! He is very accommodating and an awesome host! He was so trusting and we really appreciated that. We would stay with Blake again and would have him stay at our place anytime.
Blake is a cool guy and fun to hang out with. We were supposed to meet at 4pm but we ran late and he was all cool and flexibel. The house was in a very chill and beautiful neighborhood, a very nice place to stay that we can highly recommend. He showed us his favorite place at the lake to go swimming which was super fun. We stayed in a tent in the backyard and it was really nice. He even lend us his sleeping bags. :) Go and stay with him if you want to have a great time at South Lake Tahoe.
Met Blake first time in New Zealand and he immediately offered me to stay with him in SLT as he heard I am going to the Pacific Crest Trail.
Awesome dude and it was a blast staying with him. Had some great talks and a fun game night with his friends (he is hard to beat at his games ;)

Blake is such a cool guy. When I first arrived he instantly picked up on the important things in my life and took me to an awesome burrito place near his cabin. Had a blast listening to summer concerts on the beach with him, making brunch together, and talking about anything! Sleeping in his backyard tent also totally fulfilled my Tahoe camping needs haha. Thanks for the great stay Blake!
Blake is an awesome host and an awesome guy! He instructed me on the best hikes around town and even drove me to the trail heads (while making scenic detours). His cabin is in the loveliest neighbourhood and the tent is very spacious and clean. He even made me delicious, nitrous breakfasts (something that has been rare on my travels!). Cheers again Blake, and good luck with your mountain run you monster!
I can't commend Blake enough. From the get go he was incredibly helpful and accommodating. To begin with, he allowed us in his home before he was even there as we arrived earlier than he was arriving home. He was very friendly, funny and great to chat to. He also gave us great advice on our route further. Can't recommend staying with Blake enough and he is always welcome in South Africa
Blake was an awesome host!
I spent one night with a friend of mine in his super comfortable tent in his backyard.
You'll have really interesting conversation with him, but don't ask him his opinion about Florida in July.
You can play fun games with him but watch out for his fakes moves made just for confuse you!
You are also better don't hang out with him by the lake if you are sick because he is gonna makes you jump into it even if the water is freezing! (But then you'll be happy you have done that but don't jump twice in a row ;)
Also, don't be afraid if is gonna take you into a forest where he could easily kill you. He didn't kill us so I'm pretty sure he won't kill you!
And last but not least if his white board will be still white believe me, we have been there, we are still alive, and we are happy we have met Blake!

Blake is an awesome guy! During his stay in Bs As we shared our passion for Tango, traveling and good food. We shared long, deep inspirational talks while enjoying a good merienda and visited my favourite milongas. I highly recommend contacting him and reading his articles too!

After a long day of work for me, and a long day of travel for Blake, it was great to just chill with some wine and good conversation. And some good cats and cat vids (can't wait to try the cucumber trick)! He left in the AM to continue East, so although his stay was short it was still a pleasure to meet him and be inspired by his outlook. See ya down the road somewhere!
I met Blake at a house concert in South Lake Tahoe. He was there with some friends and other couchsurfers. The next day we got the chance to spend a little bit more time together talking and eating ice cream. He is a great guy, friendly and excited to meet new people. He is smart, open minded and inspiring. He is one of those persons who dedicates his time to make the world a better place. We need more like him. I wish we could have had more time to hang out. I'm glad I got the chance to meet him though and I'm sure you will be too :)

I stayed with Blake just one night. We shared some beers while playing some games with some other friends of him. Bake is a nice, funny and smart guy I had a good experience with!
Blake is a charming, very intelligent, sincere person and has a good sense of humor. He likes spanish culture and speak very good spanish. We spent three wonderful days in his cozy house and spent many moments talking very interesting topics. He show and explain us around lake tahoe so we could make mountain hiking and swimming in the lake, in a secret spot. Blake know how to do Lake Tahoe as Eden, and you don't have to miss the opportunity to meet Blake.
We never forget your welcome: my house is your house. So we say you the same if you visit us!

Blake is awesome! He took me and a friend (even though he was not our host) and two other couch surfers who were staying with him to this secret spot that he loves on the lake. Me and my friend had a great time even though it was a short one and would most definitely return if we are ever in Lake Tahoe again! Thank you Blake!
We were bummed when Blake left. He is an excellent conversationalist, super genuine, and has been all over the world! We had an excellent time showing him around town and explaining to him why living in SLC is pretty rad! We both recommend hosting, surfing, or just hangin out with this excellent human being!

Blake and his girlfriend Brenna are lovely people in a quaint neighborhood. Thinking back on my short time with them gives me a warm feeling. Definitely will give them a call next time i'm in Asheville, and I recommend you do the same.

Blake was a great guest! He was easy going, interesting, and easy to get along with. I invited him to join a group of my friends and their families for dinner and he was able to engage everyone in conversation. Ask him about teaching extreme tree climbing or the upcoming trip he is organizing for 10 unschoolers for 7 weeks to explore Argentina, Chile and Peru. He is welcome here anytime!
